Introduction
Teams still email spreadsheets. That breaks when two companies, or two clouds, must share live tables. Data exchange software is the cleaner path: grant access, keep a log, and stop copying files by hand. This PickMySoft guide ranks seven data exchange platforms in simple English. For pipeline-heavy work see our ETL tools and iPaaS guides.
What is the software?
A data exchange platform lets one party publish data and another party consume it under rules. That can mean a marketplace (buy a dataset), a live share (read a partner table with no extra copy), or a pipeline (pull SaaS data into your warehouse). The common job is trust: who can see which rows, and can you prove it later.
It is not the same as a chat file drop. Exchange software tracks versions, access, and often billing. It is also not only ETL. ETL moves data you already own. Exchange often means sharing with another firm.
Key features
- Access control by account, role, or row.
- Live share or scheduled copy, with a clear refresh time.
- Audit logs for who queried what.
- Connectors to warehouses, SaaS apps, and files.
- Contracts, pricing, or usage meters if you sell data.
How it works
A producer marks a table or dataset as shareable. The platform checks identity and policy. A consumer gets a live view or a synced copy in their own account. Warehouse-native tools share inside Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery, or AWS. Pipeline tools copy from Salesforce or Stripe into the warehouse on a schedule. API platforms such as MuleSoft exchange records in both directions for operations, not only analytics.
Best data exchange platforms compared
| Platform | Best for | Editor score |
|---|---|---|
| Snowflake | Live governed shares and marketplace | 4.7 |
| Databricks Delta Sharing | Open sharing across clouds | 4.6 |
| Fivetran | Hands-off inbound ELT | 4.6 |
| AWS Data Exchange | Buying datasets on AWS | 4.5 |
| Google Analytics Hub | BigQuery publishers | 4.4 |
| Airbyte | Open-source or flexible connectors | 4.4 |
| MuleSoft | API-led operational exchange | 4.3 |
1. Snowflake
Snowflake Secure Data Sharing lets a partner query your table without a nightly dump. The Marketplace adds commercial datasets. If both sides already run Snowflake, this is the simplest data exchange software for analytics.
2. Databricks Delta Sharing
Delta Sharing is an open protocol. Recipients do not all need a Databricks account. That helps when a lakehouse team must share with a partner on another cloud. Governance still sits with Unity Catalog on the producer side.
3. Fivetran
Fivetran is inbound exchange: SaaS and databases into Snowflake, BigQuery, or Databricks. Connectors stay maintained by the vendor. Snowflake’s 2026 marketing data-stack report again listed Fivetran as a Leader for integration. Pricing is usage-based (often discussed per million active rows), so large syncs cost more.
4. AWS Data Exchange
AWS Data Exchange is a catalog. You subscribe to third-party data and land it in S3, Redshift, or related AWS services. Choose it when buying commercial datasets already lives on AWS. It is weaker as a general iPaaS.
5. Google Analytics Hub
Analytics Hub publishes and subscribes to BigQuery datasets with governance. GCP-centric teams use it to exchange analytics tables inside the company or with partners who also query BigQuery.
6. Airbyte
Airbyte is the flexible pipeline option. Cloud starts low; open source can run in your own network. Connector quality varies more than Fivetran. Pick it for odd sources, data residency, or a tighter budget with engineers on staff.
7. MuleSoft
MuleSoft Anypoint is API-led integration. It exchanges data for operations: order in, status back, hybrid cloud and on-prem. Public 2026 notes often start near $2,000 a month on a credit model. Do not buy it only to fill a warehouse.
Pricing
Warehouse shares often bill compute on the consumer side and storage on the producer side. Fivetran bills usage; mid-market deals commonly land in the tens of thousands per year. Airbyte Cloud can start near $25 a month, then rise with volume; self-host trades licence for ops time. AWS and Google add marketplace fees on top of cloud usage. MuleSoft is enterprise quote territory. Always price the sync volume you will have in six months, not the demo week.
Pros and cons
Pros. Fewer CSV drops. Clear access logs. Partners see fresher data. Marketplaces turn data into a product.
Cons. Cloud lock-in if both sides must use the same warehouse. Usage bills surprise teams. Sharing personal data still needs contracts and privacy review. Open connectors can break.
Ease of use
Fivetran is the easiest inbound path: pick a connector, map a destination, watch the first sync. Snowflake and Analytics Hub feel easy if you already live there. Delta Sharing is easy for Databricks users, harder for the partner if they have never seen a share URL. MuleSoft needs integration developers. Airbyte sits in the middle.
Who should use it?
Use data exchange platforms if you sell data, share tables with a supplier, or must land many SaaS sources in one warehouse. Analytics teams start with Snowflake, Databricks, Fivetran, or Airbyte. AWS-first buyers use Data Exchange. Ops teams that must write back to source systems need MuleSoft or a similar iPaaS, not only a share.
Alternatives
SFTP and email still work for rare files. Reverse ETL tools such as those in our reverse ETL guide push warehouse data into Salesforce or ads. Informatica and Boomi remain enterprise integration suites. Azure Data Share covers the Microsoft cloud the way Analytics Hub covers Google.
Is it worth it?
Yes when two teams query the same facts every week and the current process is a fragile spreadsheet. No when you send one file a quarter. Start with the platform you already pay for. Adding a second exchange tool only pays off if that first platform cannot reach the partner.
Final verdict
The best data exchange software follows the data home. Snowflake wins live shares inside its cloud. Databricks Delta Sharing wins open cross-platform shares. Fivetran wins managed inbound pipelines. AWS Data Exchange and Analytics Hub win cloud catalogs. Airbyte wins flexibility. MuleSoft wins operational APIs. At PickMySoft, buy the share you can audit, not the longest connector list.
